These companies make losing weight sound so easy that you can't help but wonder why so many people struggle. The fact is, many of these diets, pills and other rapid weight loss gimmicks actually do work - for a while. While a few people actually manage to maintain their weight loss, most people gain back all they lost and add more when they stop their diet.

Two very popular methods to loose weight quickly are described below:

Starvation and very low calorie diets

Starvation diets typically involve severe restrictions on calorie intake, often fewer than 500 calories per day. Very low calorie diets are a bit more relaxed and typically limit calorie intake to less than 1,000 per day. After an initial adjustment period your stomach shrinks a bit, helping you tolerate eating so little food.

Very low calorie diets are probably an okay way to lose fat quickly as long as you only stay on them for a few days, you're healthy and you only want to lose a few pounds. Remember, though, that the weight you lose will mostly be water rather than fat. You'll gain back most of the weight you lost as soon as you go off the diet.

Starvation diets are unhealthy at best and can actually be dangerous if you stay on them for more than just a few days. Your body will transition into "starvation mode," which slows your metabolism to preserve your energy. Of course, this slower metabolism essentially defeats the diet's purpose and makes weight gain more likely when you return to eating a more normal diet.

Weight loss supplements or diet pills

Plenty of pills and supplements are available if you want to use them to lose weight fast. Most of these products promise to boost your metabolism, block your body's absorption of fats, or burn fat cells quickly and easily. Many also claim that you'll be able to eat whatever you choose while you take them, but others require that you limit your calories and exercise regularly - which will help you lose weight even without them.

These weight loss pills and supplements must be used with caution, even though safety regulations have become stricter in the USA and many other countries. Many of them don't fulfill their promises, so if you try them don't be surprised if you end up thinking you've thrown your money away. And despite the stricter regulations, many of them can be dangerous if you have certain health conditions and you're not careful.

No matter how badly you want to lose fat, talk with your doctor before you use one of these methods to lose weight quickly. Your health is much more important than being able to fit into those jeans you used to wear or impressing your classmates at a school reunion.
